Section 10: Government working with community to heal

Aboriginal employees in the NSW public sector

The Public Service Commission provides information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in its annual Workforce Information Report. The 2020 Report shows that the representation of employees who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander has increased over the last decade: in 2020, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were approximately 3.5% of non-casual employees in the sector.

The Premier’s Priority of developing a world class public service includes increasing the number of Aboriginal people in senior leadership roles to 114 by 2025 within the government sector. This includes building a talent pipeline by attracting more Aboriginal people, creating career development opportunities, and supporting existing Aboriginal talent through the Leadership Academy Aboriginal Career and Leadership Development Programs. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of Aboriginal senior leaders in the government sector increased from 98 to 104.
