Section 10: Government working with community to heal

National Agreement on Closing the Gap

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap came into effect in July 2020. This agreement is a collaboration among Australian governments and the Coalition of Peaks. Its goal is to improve life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, working in full partnership with Aboriginal communities to do so.

The National Agreement is underpinned by four priority reform areas:

  1. Formal partnerships and shared decision making
  2. Building the community-controlled sector
  3. Transforming government organisations
  4. Sharing access to data and information at a regional level.

Governments and organisations are monitoring their progress as they work towards targets in these reform areas. Each state must work with its peak organisations to implement the plan locally. The NSW Government is working in partnership with the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peaks and other partners. Aboriginal Affairs NSW leads the coordination of work needed in the annual NSW implementation to meet the state’s targets under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
