Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme and Funeral Assistance Fund

We have used historical terms; however, ‘Aborigine’* is no longer used or accepted when referring to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Under the Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme, the NSW Government pays out $75,000 to members of the Stolen Generations who were removed from their family and committed to the care of the NSW Aborigines Protection Board* or the Aborigines Welfare Board*.

The payment recognises the harm Aboriginal people experienced. Only members of the Stolen Generations who are still alive can apply for and receive a payment. Recipients can also ask for a personal written apology from the NSW Government. It covers the period from the introduction of the NSW Aborigines Protection Act 1909* until the Act was repealed on 2 June 1969. The scheme began on 1 July 2017 and will run for five years.

The Funeral Assistance Fund pays $7,000 to Stolen Generations survivors to assist with the cost of their funeral.

Along with these initiatives, Aboriginal Affairs NSW also leads work on healing through their strategy OCHRE, which stands for Opportunity, Choice, Healing, Responsibility, Empowerment. The plan outlines ways to work with and support Aboriginal communities by partnering with them, while keeping respect for Aboriginal culture, leadership and self-determination front of mind.
