Redfern Statement

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders met in Redfern in 2016 to address the disadvantages and inequality still felt by Aboriginal communities. They drew up the Redfern Statement, which includes sections on health, justice, violence prevention, early childhood and disability. The statement was directed at Australian governments and calls for better relationships between communities and government, so that Aboriginal people can be involved in decisions being made about them.

Almost 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, led by the National Congress for Australia’s First Peoples, worked on the Statement, which was delivered to the then Prime Minister, The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull, in February 2017.
