Section 8: Road to reconciliation, recognition and reparations

Treaty

A treaty is a legally binding formal agreement between a government and Indigenous people. Australia does not have a formal treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A treaty would recognise the history of Aboriginal communities, prior occupation and the injustices they have endured. A treaty could also offer protection of rights and help enforce better structures and systems, allowing Aboriginal communities to be more involved in making decisions about their lands and communities.
