Section 9: Aboriginal people in NSW today

NSW Aboriginal languages

Darug, Dharawal, Gundungurra and Darginung languages were traditionally spoken in the Greater Sydney region. In NSW today, the most common languages still spoken are Wiradjuri, in central NSW, and Gamilaraay, in western NSW. While none of these languages are widely spoken, significant steps are being taken to revitalise them. You’ll learn more about the revitalisation of languages in the next section and from Creative Spirits, Aboriginal language preservation and revival webpage for more information about the importance of language to Aboriginal people.
