Section 9: Aboriginal people in NSW today

Education

In 2018, over 67% of NSW Aboriginal people aged 20 to 24 completed Year 12 or higher. This compares to over 89% in the non-Aboriginal population.

In 2018, 2,782 Aboriginal people commenced university in NSW, a significant improvement compared to 2004, when the commencement figure was 972.

There is a clear link between completing Year 12 and a positive future of employment and higher education outcomes. As part of the Premier’s Priority of increasing the number of Aboriginal young people reaching their learning potential, the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peaks, the NSW Department of Education and the Premier’s Implementation Unit are supporting students to reach their learning potential and maintain connectedness to culture and the community.
