The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation was established in 1991 to start a formal process for reconciliation with Aboriginal communities.
The Council hosted Corroboree 2000 at the Sydney Opera House from 27 May to 3 June 2000. The event marked 10 years of its work and promoted reconciliation actions to all Australians. This included the Walk for Reconciliation in which more than 250,000 people walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was one of the largest expressions of public support for reconciliation ever seen in Australia.
In 2001, the Council founded Reconciliation Australia as the national body for reconciliation.
