Equal opportunity in education

There is a clear link between completing Year 12 and higher education and employment outcomes. Completing high school is an important part of fostering equality of opportunity for Aboriginal people.

As part of the Premier’s Priority of increasing the number of Aboriginal young people who reach their learning potential, the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peaks (comprising a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations), the NSW Department of Education and the Premier’s Implementation Unit are supporting students to reach their learning potential and maintain connectedness to culture and the community. Examples of this work include the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group’s Pirru Thangkuray Cultural Engagement and Goal Setting Program, Aboriginal Learning and Engagement Centres, locally tailored cultural immersion and engagement in schools, and integrating Aboriginal culture into teaching and learning.
