Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission

The Australian Government established the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) in 1990, to oversee and advise all levels of government about Aboriginal affairs, and to administer government programs relating to Aboriginal peoples. ATSIC was abolished in 2005, following a formal inquiry into its effectiveness.
